Services

Overview

Dr. Susan Head Psychologist Durham NCI am involved in several types of services in my practice. The majority of my time is spent as a psychotherapist. But I also do life coaching, which focuses less on psychological and emotional problems and more on achieving what you want out of life. I’ve also been meditating for nearly 16 years and am trained as a meditation instructor.

Psychotherapy

Anxiety and Stress Management

I have had extensive experience treating the following:

  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder
  • Generalized anxiety
  • Social phobia
  • Panic disorder with and without agoraphobia
  • General symptoms of stress

I use a combination of cognitive behavioral and insight treatments to help you decrease your symptoms and the avoidance that typically accompanies them. See the Resources page for more information on these approaches:

  • Exposure with response prevention
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
  • Meditation and breathing techniques
  • Relaxation training

Depression

As with anxiety, I generally use a combination of insight-oriented, cognitive-behavioral, and mindfulness-based approaches, to help you overcome depression and resume your normal life. Please see the Resources page for a list of literature that complements this work.

Eating Disorders and Weight Management

My initial concentration in graduate school was in this area and I continue to focus here. I work with a variety of individuals, including those with symptoms of:

  • Anorexia
  • Bulimia
  • Binge eating
  • Obesity

There is a strong educational component in working with these issues, as well as work in normalizing eating behavior. I have co-authored a workbook on weight management that can be found on the Resources page. I often work closely with a dietitian, physician, or psychiatrist.

Relationship Counseling

This has become one of my favorite practice areas due to inspirational new directions in the field. I rely strongly on Terence Real’s work in relationship empowerment. I also like John Gottman’s work on what makes a happy marriage, and Pia Melody’s work on intimacy. These authors are listed on the Resources page.

Trauma-related issues

Trauma can have extremely debilitating and long-lasting effects. I’ve worked with both Post-traumatic stress disorder and Acute stress disorder, using a combination of therapies listed under Anxiety and Stress Management.

Life Transitions

Individuals often come in for therapy because of major changes in their lives. Whether it’s loss due to death or relationship endings, job and career challenges, moving and other new beginnings, I can help you navigate these changes and set off in new directions.
